The Steven Soderberg male-stripper pic Magic Mike will have its world premiere as the closing-night film at the Los Angeles Film Festival, which today released its official selections for the June 14-24 event. Warner Bros’ comedic drama stars Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer and Matthew McConaughery and details Tatum’s real-life experience as a stripper. It opens domestically June 29. Also among the titles announced is the world premiere of DreamWorks’ People Like Us, written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and directed by Kurtzman. Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks, Olivia Wilde, Mark Duplass and Michelle Pfeiffer star in the film set in the Summer Showcase sidebar. The festival’s slate of almost 200 feature films, short films, and music videos represent more than 30 countries. It already had announced that Woody Allen’s To Rome With Love would kick off the 2012 event as the opening-night film.

Much to the delight of women and gay men everywhere, the first trailer for Channing Tatum’s semi-autobiographical stripper movie “Magic Mike” has hit the web, giving eager squeers their first eyeful of Tatum’s sick stripper moves. (I’d definitely keep a few extra twenties in my purse if I knew Tatum was coming over…) But one thing we didn’t see a whole lot of was co-star Alex Pettyfer.

To be fair, Tatum does play the film’s titular character, but when news of Pettyfer’s casting made the rounds last year, it sounded as though his protege character, The Kid — loosely based on Tatum — would be the focus of the film.

Whether the flick truly is a Pettyfer vehicle remains to be seen, but from a marketing standpoint it’s sound business for Warner Bros. to position Tatum as the star. The 31-year-old is coming off a big 2011 in which he starred in no fewer than five movies. He’s already flexed considerable box office muscle in the early months of 2012 with the romantic drama “The Vow” and the high-school comedy “21 Jump Street.” Tatum is a proven performer… unlike his young co-star.

Pettyfer’s had a tough time establishing himself as a bankable leading man, with the under-performing “I Am Number Four” his highest-profile pic to date. Then there are always those pesky prima donna rumors that seem to follow him, tarnishing a bit of his golden gleam. Will “Magic Mike” be the project that sets Alex Pettyfer on the path to true leading-man stardom? We’ll have to see how things shake (and shimmy) out come June 29.

We already know that director Steven Soderbergh is planning on showing some major skin in his upcoming male stripper flick, Magic Mike.

“There is a lot of ass,” a source tells me. “Channing Tatum is such a good dancer in it and Alex Pettyfer looks so good.”

But there’s more…

No, there’s no full frontal, but I’ve heard there may be a scene showing one of the studly costars pleasuring himself.

And that’s all I’m gonna say about that because, well, I don’t want to spoil that kind of surprise for you. Here’s hoping if the self-love scene makes the final cut, it’s as good as it sounds.

I’m told the movie is not just a big show of manmeat stripping from Tatum, Pettyfer, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello and Matthew McConaughey, among others.

“It does get dark at times,” another source said. “There’s some major drama for Alex’s character. It’s not all pretty.”
