Alex Pettyfer wishes he could fly.
The British actor admits he was envious of the superpowers displayed by his ‘I Am Number Four’ character John but loved getting the chance to try out having unusual skills.
He said: “Everything my character John goes through starts triggering all these different emotions for Sarah (Dianna Agron), which then trigger his powers. Sarah represents this real sense of normality for him; the possibility that his life could be normal with her. Yet as he’s falling in love with her, all the things he doesn’t want to happen start happening. He starts getting his powers, and jealousy triggers him to become stronger and to have his telekinesis and his light powers.
“In the movie I’ve got telekinesis and I’ve got lumen, which is a source of light that I can use. But there are so many things I would want in real life-one power would definitely be the ability to fly.”
As well as enjoying having superpowers, Alex loved the physical aspect of the movie, particularly getting to use guns and do his own stunts.
He added: “I really loved all of it. I mean, from day one where I got the movie, to training for a couple of months before, to actually doing it. I’m twenty years of age and I’m just a big kid. Not many guys get to experience what I’ve experienced. To go on a movie set and run around, and play with guns and jump off cliffs, that was really fun.”

It seems like we are getting closer and closer to an official casting announcement for Jace Wayland in the upcoming big screen adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s first book in “The Mortal Instruments” series, “City of Bones.” Just last week we learned that “Beastly” and “I Am Number Four” star Alex Pettyfer is the leading contender to step into the Shadowhunter’s shoes.
When MTV News caught up with Alex and his “Number Four” director DJ Caruso over the weekend, we had to ask him his thoughts on the role and how soon the decision will be made.
At first he played dumb, pretending not to know what we were asking him.
“What’s that?” he said, when asked what the latest news was on the Alex-as-Jace rumors.
Thanks to some playful nudging from DJ, Alex opened up just a bit and offered some interesting thoughts.
“Yeah, I did hear about this,” he relented. “I read the books, I think they are phenomenal. Screen Gems are making it so I don’t know,” he said, at which point DJ cut in to point out that Screen Gems is the studio that brought us “Burlesque.” Not to mention “Easy A,” which we reminded them both, and all agreed is a “great movie.” But getting back to Alex and his decision to take on the role or not…
“I don’t know,” he said, implying that he’s putting a lot of thought into this decision. “I just got to figure out what I got to do next. … I just got to figure out what I go to do,” he added. “But I’m a big fan of the books and I think it’s cool.”
Check back in with Hollywood Crush tomorrow for the second part of our “Mortal Instruments” interview segment in which Alex talks about potential co-star Lily Collins!

At the press day for the sci-fi thriller I Am Number Four we learned a lot about the film’s handsome star, Alex Pettyfer. He did model once but he doesn’t consider himself a model. We also learned that almost every single thing you’ve read about his background on the internet is completely wrong (more on that as we get closer to the I Am Number Four release date). But one thing the internet does have correct is Pettyfer really wants to play British Formula One race car driver James Hunt in a feature film.
Pettyfer never intended to be an actor (he wound up taking a media class only because he had a crush on a girl who was enrolled in the class) and actually wanted to race cars as a teen. But now he’s completely caught up in acting and is looking forward to being able to combine his passion for films with his long-time love of racing to help him portray James Hunt on the big screen.
While doing interviews for DreamWorks’ I Am Number Four, Pettyfer confirmed the James Hunt biopic is in the works. “I love the story of James Hunt. James Hunt is something very gritty, it’s a great story about a man who was very charismatic,” explained Pettyfer. “Just the story of how a man independently financed himself to make sure that he was going to live his dream. He was going to become world champion and no one was going to stop him. And unfortunately no one gave him any money. He was an international playboy and there was this lovely, romantic story in there where he fell in love once like ‘John’ does in I Am Number Four, [...]and he fell in love and she broke his heart. She ran off with Richard Burton. And yeah, it’s a very heartwrenching story and a story that I loved.”
And a little known fact about Pettyfer: he’s played the race car driver before. “I will tell you, I wasn’t a model but when I was about 12 years of age, the year before I did Tom Brown’s Schooldays, no one knows this but I played James Hunt in a documentary and they did flashback. I didn’t have any agent or I didn’t do anything, my mom just wanted to see if it would be something…because, you know, she took me to tennis lessons and swimming lessons, and she just thought this would be something that I’d be interested in. So I played James Hunt once before and hopefully in the next year or two I will play James Hunt again.”
Pettyfer will also be producing the still-untitled film which is based on Tom Rubython’s book, Shunt: The Story of James Hunt.
